LA County Sheriff’s Deputy Successfully Sued a Security Guard for Excessive Use of Force that Left Blake Anderson Blinded

Los Angeles, CA – A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy, identified as Blake Anderson, has won a lawsuit against a security guard, in which he alleged excessive use of force resulting in permanent blindness. The incident has raised concerns about law enforcement accountability and the need for proper training within private security firms.

The incident occurred on June 19, 2020, outside a local shopping mall, where Anderson was responding to a disturbance call. The security guard, employed by a private security firm contracted by the shopping center, reportedly approached Anderson aggressively without provocation. In a shocking turn of events, the guard allegedly struck Anderson forcefully, causing severe injuries to his eyes.

Anderson immediately sought medical attention, but it was determined that his injuries were irreversible, resulting in permanent loss of vision. Subsequently, he filed a lawsuit against both the security guard and the security company responsible for the guard’s actions.

Earlier this week, a Los Angeles County jury unanimously sided with Anderson, ruling in his favor and awarding him a substantial amount of damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, as well as loss of future earnings. The jury’s decision sends a strong message regarding accountability and the importance of upholding public safety while respecting individuals’ rights.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva expressed satisfaction with the jury’s verdict, emphasizing that no one is above the law, regardless of their profession. He called for heightened accountability and improved training for security guards, highlighting that they often engage in situations that require individuals’ protection and security.

The incident has prompted discussions about the need for enhanced regulation and oversight within the private security industry. While many security firms operate professionally and responsibly, incidents like the one involving Anderson underscore the importance of ensuring all guards are adequately trained to handle escalated situations.

In light of the verdict, Anderson’s legal team hopes this case will serve as a precedent, urging other victims of excessive force at the hands of security guards to come forward and seek justice. They believe this outcome will help deter future abuses and create awareness among security firms about the consequences of employing individuals who resort to unnecessary violence.

The security guard and the company he worked for have not made any public statements thus far, and it remains unclear whether they plan to appeal the jury’s decision. Nonetheless, Anderson’s victory represents a significant step forward in the quest for justice and the importance of accountability within the private security sector.
